March 21, 2026: Thunder Bay Under Yellow Freezing Drizzle Advisory This Evening

THUNDER BAY – Weather Alert – Thunder Bay is experiencing a slippery evening as Environment Canada has issued a Yellow Advisory for freezing drizzle in the city. The advisory indicates that areas of freezing drizzle are expected to persist tonight, leading to light ice accumulation that could make surfaces icy and hard to see at first glance. Environment Canada rates the impact as moderate with high confidence in the forecast.

Today’s Weather Overview

Current Conditions

As of 5:00 PM EDT Saturday at Thunder Bay Airport, conditions were reported as light drizzle with a temperature of 0.1°C. Humidity was at 98 percent, pressure was 100.3 k Pa and falling, and an east-northeast wind blowing at 21 km/h reduced visibility to 5 km. This combination creates a raw, damp, near-freezing scenario that closely aligns with the advisory conditions.

The primary concern this evening isn’t heavy snow but rather the thin, hard-to-detect glaze left by freezing drizzle. Environment Canada warns that icy surfaces are likely and may be difficult to spot, posing risks for both drivers and pedestrians.

Tomorrow’s Forecast

Expected Conditions

For tonight, Environment Canada states that periods of light snow or freezing drizzle will wrap up late this evening, followed by overcast skies and a 40 percent chance of flurries. Winds from the northeast at 20 km/h gusting to 40 are anticipated to calm down after midnight. The overnight low is expected to drop to -10°C, with a wind chill around -13.

On Sunday, March 22 will remain mostly cloudy with a high reaching only 0°C. Northeastern winds near 20 km/h will ease in the afternoon; however, expect it to feel much colder in the morning with wind chills around -18. Sunday night stays mostly cloudy before clearing up partially after midnight, bringing temperatures down to -10°C and wind chills near -14.

Monday offers some sunshine with bright skies and a high of 1°C. Following that day, unsettled weather continues with flurries on Monday night, followed by a 60 percent chance of flurries on Tuesday along with another high of 1°C; Wednesday will see more snow periods alongside colder temperatures peaking at -4°C.

Wardrobe Recommendations

Tonight calls for solid footwear and layers. Waterproof boots with good traction along with a warm coat, gloves, and hat are your best bet since freezing drizzle can create almost invisible ice on sidewalks , steps, and parking lots. Sunday morning will feel more like winter than spring , so wearing extra layers remains wise even if temps reach close to zero later on.Weather TriviaThunder Bay’s average temperatures during this season typically hover around 3 °C for daytime highs and drop down to -9 °C overnight. So , Sunday’s predicted high of0 °C sits just below normal , while tonight’s low of-10 °C comes close tothe seasonal averagefor late March.SynopsisThunder Bay weather update for March21 ,2026 : Environment Canada has issueda Yellow Advisoryforfreezingdrizzle , alerting residents about icyandslipperysurfaces tonight , followedby cooler overcastweather into the night.
