A community in southwestern Ontario that suffered significant flooding is extending its state of emergency as recovery efforts move forward days after heavy rains damaged roads and properties.

The township of Southwold, located just south of London, has chosen to keep the emergency declaration active despite roads becoming passable after the floodwaters went down.

Officials from Southwold have reached out to Ontario’s municipal affairs ministry to inquire about any financial aid that might be available for residents affected by the flooding.

Last week, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for much of southwestern Ontario, with some regions receiving over 200 millimeters of rain on Friday.

Authorities in Southwold are advising residents whose properties were impacted by the flooding to get in touch with the township for information that “may help with accessing the financial support program.”

The restoration efforts will take several weeks to address all damages caused by the storm.

“Residents are also encouraged to submit any photos, video and rainfall data you may have. This may be useful as the township works to understand what happened and what can be done to lessen the impact of future events,” they stated.

The township plans to organize the collection of items damaged by flooding.

This community was at least the third municipality in Ontario to declare a state of emergency last week.

St. Catharines and nearby Lincoln were also among those affected after consecutive storms brought around a quarter of their usual annual rainfall to parts of the Niagara Region.

This report by The Canadian Press was first Aug. 11, 2026.
