Ontario’s electricity producer has not yet submitted a formal application to extend the operational life of the Pickering nuclear power station, even though it has been over eight months since the Ford government declared its intention to keep the plant running longer.
With an electricity capacity challenge looming in 2025 and beyond, the Ford government is eager to extend Pickering’s operations until September 2026. This move aims to ensure a reliable power supply as demand increases and other nuclear plants shut down.
However, time is running out as the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), the federal authority responsible for approving or rejecting such extensions, informed that the province still hasn’t completed necessary paperwork.
This information is crucial for the application process, and now there’s just one month left before the deadline passes.

“The Commission requires that Ontario Power Generation submit specific information by June 30, 2023, if it intends to operate the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station beyond December 31, 2024,” stated CNSC in a message to . “The Commission Registry has not yet received an application from Ontario Power Generation.”

If approval isn’t granted, this plant currently generating 14 percent of Ontario’s energy will be shut down in 2025, leading to a considerable shortfall for the province.
The Ford government appears unperturbed about the tight timeline, suggesting that the Crown corporation tasked with filing will meet its deadlines without issue.
“OPG is on track to submit their application before the end of June and has already started to provide supporting documents as part of the regulatory process,” said a spokesperson for Energy Minister Todd Smith.
