The aluminum sector is facing severe challenges, as Ontario and other provinces are being heavily impacted by U. S. tariffs, warns the president of a Bradford company.
The Canadian dream of working hard to buy a home, support your family, and afford groceries might be fading.
That was the message from Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre during his visit to Spectra Aluminum Products in Bradford West Gwillimbury today.
Poilievre pointed out that rising costs have led many people to rely on food banks, attributing this situation to years of Liberal government spending which has resulted in higher taxes and inflation.
“Canada was not like this before this Liberal government, but the good news is that it won’t be like this after they’re gone,” he said. “We’re going to restore the promise in this country.”
Two key aspects of his plan include cutting government spending and reducing taxes, along with his ongoing efforts to lower fuel prices which were highlighted during his previous visit to Bradford in April.
An additional factor driving up living costs is the U. S. tariffs imposed on Canadian goods.
“We want to use Canada’s leverage to fight for zero tariffs on Canadian aluminum. We have the resources the Americans need,” Poilievre stated. “They also need our oil. What I’m proposing is to build a massive strategic reserve of minerals and oil that is available for those countries that pay tariffs off Canada.”
He believes that this would give the American administration enough motivation to eliminate tariffs against Canada for their national security’s sake.
“We want to unite our country around Canada first. This country needs to stand up for itself. Other countries are not going to protect us,” Poilievre added.
Founded in 1978, Spectra is a family-run business specializing in aluminum extrusion and manufacturing services including design, development, production, finishing, packing, and transportation for residential, commercial, and specialty markets.
Their products range from window panes and office furniture frames to solar panels and large windmill ladders.
Spectra owner Dave Hudson didn’t share exact figures but mentioned that a significant portion of their business comes from exports to the U. S., making it tough for them due to the current 50-percent tariffs against them; they can’t compete with local suppliers there.
“It really chops us out at the knees trying to compete,” he explained.
The company can’t absorb those tariff costs easily or pass them onto customers without hurting sales; this has led to decreased exports into the U. S. and job losses here in Canada according to Hudson.
“The aluminum industry is suffering huge losses,” he noted. “Ontario and other provinces are being decimated.”
While specific layoff numbers weren’t provided for individual locations, Hudson shared that a coalition within Canada’s aluminum extrusion sector-about half of which are based in Ontario-has already seen over 1,000 layoffs since last March when U. S. tariffs were introduced.
This recent visit from Poilievre coincides with claims from the federal government about finalizing a trade deal with the U. S. by Friday.
Canada-U. S. Trade Minister Dominic Le Blanc along with U. S. trade representative Jamieson Greer smiled while addressing reporters Wednesday about a draft deal they’ve been working on.
No official details have emerged yet; however, President Donald Trump indicated there were compromises made by both parties including Canada dropping tariffs on American agricultural products while revising plans for Keystone XL pipeline routes between Alberta and Gulf Coast USA alongside minor reductions from the U. S. side on duties affecting Canadian cars and lumber imports.
Poilievre refrained from commenting on specifics until more information becomes available regarding these negotiations as they haven’t been disclosed yet publicly.
