Houck Takes Home Provincial Title

Colton Houck from the Sarnia Rapids won gold in the 50-metre breaststroke (34.31 seconds) for boys aged 12 during the recent Ontario swimming championships in Toronto.

Houck also placed fourth in the 50 freestyle (27.77 seconds), fifth in the 100 freestyle (1:02.23), sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.12), eighth in the 50 butterfly (31.27 seconds), and tenth in the 200 breaststroke (2:56.59).

Aili Girardi, a teammate from Rapids, finished eighth in the 100 backstroke (1:08.54) for girls aged 15-16. She also ranked 18th in the 50 backstroke and came in at 28th place for the 200 backstroke.

The Rapids will welcome a new head coach, John Greaney, who will work alongside coach Allan Sundby when their upcoming season kicks off in September.

Bourassa Tournament Expands

The third annual Justin Bourassa memorial tournament this week in Sarnia has grown into what organizers describe as Ontario’s largest amateur tennis event.

This year’s field includes professionals competing for over $15,000 in prize money, with some players boasting NCAA backgrounds and current Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome players from all over North America,” tournament director Matt Mueller stated. “.. The level of talent coming to our courts this year is truly unlike anything this city has ever seen.”

The matches were set to start Wednesday at the Sarnia Tennis Club and conclude on Sunday. Admission is free.

Bourassa was a certified instructor and coach at that club who lost his life during a police shooting incident in London back in 2021.

The proceeds from a silent auction held Saturday and Sunday will benefit Love All: Justin Bourassa Foundation, which focuses on youth tennis development and community programs.

This tournament features an interactive exhibit by Ontario Tennis Association for guests, along with raffles for U. S. Open tickets, food trucks, and ice cream vendors.

Sarnia Sturgeon Move Forward in OSFL Playoffs

The Sarnia Sturgeon will take on Brantford Bisons during an under-16 AA championship semifinal this Sunday at Norm Perry Park starting at noon.

The winning team advances to championship weekend for OSFL taking place in London.

The U16 Sturgeon triumphed over Chatham-Kent Cougars with an score of 18-13 during quarter-finals to make it into semifinals for two consecutive years now.

“This is more than a motivated group; it’s an inspired group,” commented Sturgeon coach Vince Flamia. “Not many people believed we would get here after losing some talented players last year. We are facing a strong Brantford team that’s riding high after defeating top-seeded Etobicoke Eagles , but we’re prepared for what lies ahead.”

The U12 Sturgeon are set to face North Bay Bulldogs for OSFL A championship this Sunday at York University after securing an impressive victory against Cougars with a score of86 -70 during semifinals.

Meanwhile , U18 Sturgeon are visiting Cougars aiming to compete within AA consolation semifinals following their triumph over Woodstock Wolverines with final result being22 -2.

Sadly , U14 Sturgeon faced defeat against Guelph Jr. Gryphons falling short24 -0 during AA championship quarter finals.

Sarnia Imperials Prepare to Host Power Five Semifinal

Two-time defending champions , Sarnia Imperials , are set to host Burlington Longhorns on Saturday July25th as part of Ontario Power5 Football League semifinal taking placeat Norm Perry Park.

The Imperials ended their regular seasonon Saturdaywitha58 -14 home victoryover Sault Stealerswho finishedthe regularseasonat0 -6.

The Imperials finished tiedforfirstplacewith Sudbury Spartans however Spartans clinchedthetiebreakerafterwinningtheironlyhead-to-headmatchupagainst Imperials.

Sarniahad previouslydefeated Longhorns twicealreadythisseasonwinning15 -8in Sarniand then23 -22in Burlington.

Thechampionshipgameissetfor Saturday August8th.
