A number of streets are set to be repaved this year.

During Monday’s meeting, city council approved a $3.25 million contract with Ontario Limited (Sev Con Paving). You can find the complete list of asphalt resurfacing projects in the council agenda.

This list doesn’t include major road rehabilitation projects that were approved earlier.

The council instructed staff to work on changes to the financial accountability agreement with Tourism Sarnia Lambton (TSL) related to the Municipal Accommodation Tax.

The city made this agreement with TSL back in 2022, retroactive to 2020.

“I would like to, maybe, urge TSL to see this as a reset, to see this one-year renewal as not a negative but a positive,” said Councillor Anne Marie Gillis.

TSL Interim Executive Director Adam Veen asked to speak at the meeting but was not there.

City staff have been directed to hire external legal and planning assistance to defend against Indwell’s proposed project on George Street after the Committee of Adjustment denied it, bringing the case before the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT).

The motion supporting the Committee of Adjustment received backing from Councillors George Vandenberg, Anne Marie Gillis, Terry Burrell, Bill Dennis, and Dave Boushy.

A case management conference with the OLT is scheduled for May 6.

The city anticipates ending 2025 with an overall deficit of $5.55 million.

The preliminary year-end figures were shared ahead of the year-end audit.

The City of Sarnia has secured $50,000 from the Community Emergency Preparedness Grant program for purchasing a tethered drone.

“I think it’s something that’s going to be very, very useful going forward, especially considering the size of the city,” said Councillor Anne Marie Gillis.

The total cost is about $121,645. City staff suggested covering the remaining $71,645 through funds saved from completed capital projects in the infrastructure reserve.

The next regular council meeting is planned for May 25; however, there will be a special council meeting on May 11 for public input regarding the comprehensive zoning bylaw.

This meeting is set for 1 p. m. at city hall.

Mayor Mike Bradley mentioned that this forum on May 11 isn’t intended for motions from council but is meant for listening to all speakers.
