The City of Sarnia has finished a multi-year project worth $11.1 million aimed at updating its transit infrastructure, improving facilities, and adding 20 new buses to its fleet.
This initiative was backed by over $4.7 million from the Government of Canada, more than $3.7 million from the Government of Ontario, and around $2.7 million from the City of Sarnia.
The work involved enhancements to the city’s transit garage, building a new transit terminal, and refreshing as well as expanding Sarnia Transit’s vehicle fleet. The new buses consist of conventional, electric, and specialized options.
The improvements to infrastructure and the fleet aim to boost transit safety, reliability, and accessibility while increasing service capacity and enhancing amenities for passengers.
“This funding has been instrumental in renewing the transit fleet; enhancing our passenger experience at transit terminals; and improving accessibility for riders,” said David Jackson, Sarnia’s general manager of engineering and operations. “Long-term funding programs like ICIP allow municipalities to develop multi-year budgets and effectively implement our capital programs to ensure our transit system continues to serve rider needs.”
The construction was partly funded through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP), which supports building, expanding, and upgrading urban and rural transit networks. This funding program is designed to enhance services that strengthen public transport systems across Canada.
Sarnia also secured $1.2 million through the 2025-26 Ontario Gas Tax program. These funds can be allocated for operational and capital expenses related to transit.
According to city officials, projects were completed throughout 2024 and 2025.
“We are pleased that this funding was approved in time to support the successful completion of these projects throughout 2024 and 2025,” said Mayor Mike Bradley. “This investment helped facilitate the renewal of our transit services and strengthen our downtown core.”
