One person has died and another was airlifted to hospital following a crash near Third Concession Road, north of Pickering, on Monday morning, Durham Region police say.
An 85-year-old woman was driving a sedan north on Altona Road around 10:45 a. m. when a motorist driving south in a Toyota SUV crossed into the northbound lane and collided with her head on, police said in a news release.
The 85-year-old was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said. An 84-year-old woman who was also riding in her car was airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre, where she was in stable but critical condition as of Tuesday morning.
The driver of the Toyota SUV, a 74-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Police have not yet released the identities of those involved.
The investigation is ongoing, and police say the scene will be closed for an extended period due to the severity of the crash. Anyone with dash cam or cellphone video of the incident is being asked to contact police.
