Just a few weeks after Premier Doug Ford warned about halting electricity exports to the U. S., Ontario is preparing to start importing power from New York.

This strategy aims to compensate for the reduced output from the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, which is currently undergoing a $26.8-billion upgrade.

However, this decision has faced backlash, as the Ontario Clean Air Alliance criticized it for bringing in what they label “dirty American electricity.”

In a Facebook post responding to an article on October 15, the advocacy group argued that this contract makes Ontario more susceptible to potential hostilities from U. S. President Donald Trump. They urged the province to focus on renewable energy sources instead to cover the shortfall.

“We have lower cost and more secure options to meet our electricity needs,” stated the Ontario Clean Air Alliance.

The organization suggested on its website that “Ontario can reduce peak demand and strengthen our electricity system by paying large commercial and industrial users to shift more of their electricity use to off-peak periods, and deploying more grid-scale batteries.”

They also mentioned that resuming solar and wind infrastructure projects could alleviate some of the energy pressures, along with seeking assistance from other municipalities through “expanded wind power development in Quebec and solar and water power from Manitoba.”

Will U. S. imports affect your bills?

Keith Brooks, programs director at Environmental Defence Canada, told that the province should have invested in cheaper wind and solar energy instead of relying more on nuclear power.

Brooks pointed out that while Ontario has imported energy from the U. S. before, it usually occurs during peak summer usage rather than winter months.

“It’s happening because the government has mismanaged this file,” he said in his comments to .

The impact of imported U. S. power on residents’ bills remains uncertain; however, new data released by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) indicated that households using 700 kilowatt-hours of electricity each month will see their bills decrease by $23 due to a provincial rebate program.

The OEB also shared details about upcoming winter electricity rates for homes, small businesses, and farms set for Nov. 1 through April 30, 2027:

Off-peak – 9.1 cents/k Wh, down from current 9.8 cents/k Wh Mid-peak – 14.6 cents/k Wh, down from current 15.7 cents/k Wh On-peak – 18.9 cents/k Wh, down from current 20.3 cents/k Wh

Electricity costs for most households in Ontario follow time-of-use pricing rules which categorize rates into three tiers: on-peak, mid-peak and off-peak.

Diving deeper into winter months between Nov. 1 and April 30:

Off-peak – from 7 p. m. until 7 a. m., plus all day during weekends and holidays Mid-peak – between 11 a. m. and 5 p. m. On-peak – occurring between 7 a. m. to 11 a. m., then again from 5 p. m. until 7 p. m.

Ford hints at cutting off U. S. energy exports amidst trade tensions

<p As recently as July, Ford didn’t rule out stopping electrical exports to New York, Michigan and Minnesota as leverage during ongoing trade disputes with the U. S. Tensions escalated over summer months including job loss notifications at Stelco attributed to U. S tariffs targeting Canadian steel products.

Lately in August Ford clarified during a press conference held in Vaughan that he wouldn’t cut off power exports alone without support through a united “Team Canada” approach alongside other premiers.

The reason behind Ontario’s need for U. S.-sourced power

The refurbishment process for OPG Pickering-Canada’s oldest nuclear facility-was announced by Ontario for completion in early2024.

An announcement made by Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) noted on Oct.1 regarding securing “additional short-term capacity” via six-month agreements with Alpha Generation allowing necessary maintenance work needed within infrastructure systems.

This agreement with Alpha Generation provides an extra capacity boost of up to 600 megawatts during winter starting Nov.1 accounting only for under three percent overall demand across Ontario’s total electric consumption value remains undisclosed publicly yet reported earlier as part under contract terms previously discussed before signing finalization period ending soon.

Alpha Generation operates primarily using oil-fired generators sourced mainly located throughout New York State contributing significantly towards these contracts requirements outlined above each year continuing forward throughout future business outlook cycles projected long term viability standing strong since inception year first founded back several years ago already showing positive trends so far ensuring continued stability ahead despite uncertainties faced overall locally nationally/internationally speaking economic environments constantly changing every passing moment today !
