Ontario Provincial Police report that a 78-year-old man has lost his life after being hit by a falling tree while cleaning up after an ice storm near Peterborough.

The incident took place on Monday at a property located on Burnham Line in the Township of Otonabee-South Monaghan.

According to police, a witness mentioned that the homeowner had sought assistance in removing trees that were damaged during the recent ice storm.

Authorities state that both individuals were skilled in tree removal and had successfully cut down four or five trees prior to the last one falling and striking one of them.

The man was declared dead at the scene.

Police are urging local residents to take all necessary precautions when handling damaged trees and clearing their properties.

Currently, over 32,000 Hydro One customers remain without power more than a week after the storm impacted central and eastern parts of the province, damaging over 2,300 hydro poles.

The communities around Peterborough and Orillia were among those most affected.

Hydro One reports that more than 4,800 crews are actively working to restore electricity.

The ice storm on March 30 caused power outages for over a million homes and businesses across Ontario. In the following days, strong winds and heavy rainfall hindered restoration efforts.
