The province’s Special Investigations Unit has assigned one subject official and two witness officials in its inquiry into a police-related shooting that resulted in a man’s death south of Port Elgin on Feb. 21.
A representative for the civilian law enforcement agency gave an update on Monday regarding the assignment of officials. No further details were shared, and the investigation is still in progress.
The SIU, which looks into cases where police are involved in incidents leading to death, serious injury, firearm discharge at a person, or sexual assault, announced on Feb. 21 it had activated its mandate concerning a police-involved shooting at a home on the Bruce Saugeen Townline.
During the incident, officers fired their weapon, resulting in the death of a 48-year-old man, as stated by the SIU in a news release at that time.
Initial reports indicated that throughout February 21, the man was allegedly involved in several motor vehicle thefts and break-ins across multiple areas, including stealing a firearm, according to the SIU’s news release.
As events unfolded throughout the day, law enforcement made numerous efforts to find him. He was spotted driving a stolen vehicle in the afternoon. A tire deflation device was used, causing the stolen vehicle to leave the road before he fled on foot, as noted in the release.
He was found near Side Road 13 and Bruce-Saugeen Townline. An interaction occurred between him and officers outside a residence where one officer discharged his weapon and struck the man, according to the SIU.
Efforts were made to save his life as he was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead by medical staff, stated by SIU.
In another news release from South Bruce OPP, they mentioned that around 5:50 p. m. on Feb. 21, officers tried to arrest someone connected with several earlier incidents throughout South Bruce and Huron County.
The OPP Emergency Response Team along with Canine Unit located this individual at a residence on Bruce-Saugeen Townline in Kincardine Municipality. During an encounter there, police discharged their firearm leading to this person’s death as confirmed by OPP’s announcement.
Since SIU has invoked its mandate for this case, further information will not be available from OPP per their statement.
On that same afternoon at 4:44 p. m., West Region OPP shared via social media that Bruce Saugeen Townline had been closed between Side Road 10 and J & I Side Road close to North Bruce south of Port Elgin due to significant police activity in that area; motorists were advised to use alternate routes.
Simultaneously around this time frame, Saugeen Shores police posted asking people to avoid Gustavus and Goderich Street intersection due to multi-vehicle crash happenings there; they assured no public danger existed while more updates would come from OPP when possible.
A subsequent post at 6:48 p. m. indicated authorities responded actively toward serious motor vehicle collision near Goderich Street intersecting Gustavus Street where investigations continued collaboratively involving both Saugeen Shores police alongside OPP; additional details remained unavailable during that period per their update statement.
This afternoon saw black pickup truck remain parked within closed intersection vicinity for hours while authorities conducted thorough searches through area-car parts littered roadway alongside heavily damaged vehicles lined up down Gustavus Street nearby witness accounts claimed they observed male fleeing from scene post-collision incident occurring there too!
