An Ottawa police officer lost his life in a two-vehicle accident that shut down Highway 7, which is a major route to the town of Perth, Ont., and serves as an alternative to Highway 401, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.
The collision involving a passenger vehicle and a transport truck occurred around 3:45 a. m. Friday on Highway 7, east of Drummond Street in the area southwest of Ottawa, police reported via tweets.
In a news release, authorities stated that the driver of the passenger vehicle was identified as Drew Nadeau, a 31-year-old from Perth.
According to tweets from Ottawa police, Nadeau was a constable who was driving home after finishing his shift. He had previously served as a firefighter with the military before joining the police force in March 2020.
The driver of the truck was not hurt in the incident.
About eleven kilometers of Highway 7 were blocked off between Lanark Road or County Road 511 and Drummond Concession 7.
