A devastating fire tore through historic downtown Bowmanville in early March, resulting in the loss of 54-year-old Kelli Faris.

This year was filled with major news stories in Durham Region. The tariffs set by incoming U. S. President Donald Trump became the biggest story not just locally but across the nation, creating worries about potential job losses for residents-especially in Oshawa and other areas reliant on the auto sector-just weeks after Trump’s inauguration.

The heartbreaking fire that affected Bowmanville’s historic downtown also marked a significant event this year. Several buildings were lost to the flames, and sadly, a body later confirmed to be 54-year-old Kelli Faris was discovered amid the debris.

A mixed bag of news surfaced when a home-based bakery in Ajax had to relocate after gaining immense popularity from a positive Tik Tok review. Fortunately, it found a new place to operate in Pickering Village this fall.

The political landscape in Durham Region saw its share of drama this year, with infighting (Whitby), violations of conduct codes (Pickering), and some questionable behavior overall. However, nothing was as strange as an allegation against a Clarington councillor who reportedly sent death threats to a possible rival.

A long-term care facility in Pickering that experienced one of the highest death rates during the pandemic-where even army assistance was required due to dire conditions-is back in headlines now that the province has approved an expansion plan, prompting protests from seniors’ groups.

An honourable mention goes out to Scugog Township where local residents are rallying to protect the historic Port Perry Fairgrounds, which is rumored to be eyed by developers.
