Susan Gillen, a well-respected member of the Woodstock, Ontario community, passed away peacefully at Sakura House on June 12, 2026. Born on July 15, 1948, in Woodstock, Susan dedicated her life to service and had a genuine passion for people. Her career was diverse and impacted many lives.

Throughout her career, Susan connected with countless individuals across different fields. She worked in legal services, human resources, real estate, job placement, teaching, and court reporting. She enjoyed boating on the Great Lakes and was an enthusiastic golfer at the Craigown Golf and Country Club. Everyone appreciated her warm nature and talent for bringing people together both personally and professionally.

Susan’s dedication to her community showed through her extensive volunteer work and leadership roles. She served as President of the Oxford Personnel Association and held a position on the board of the Woodstock United Way. Her commitment to the YMCA/YWCA was highlighted by her role as President and board member. Additionally, she chaired the Fanshawe Liaison Committee and contributed as recording secretary for the Elgin/Oxford Legal Clinic. Her love for boating also shone through during her time as commodore and board member of the Cliffside Yacht Club while being a member of the Port Dover Yacht Club along with past membership in Long Point Bay Boating Club.

After a fulfilling career, Susan retired from her own business, Gillen Reporting Service. There she focused on being a special examiner for examinations for discovery and depositions in Oxford County. Her expertise and professionalism set high standards in her field.

Susan was predeceased by her dear husband Paul in 2025 as well as her parents Bill and Mary Jane Newell. She is survived by her sister Patricia Tackle (née Newell) along with her spouse Jack. Susan also leaves behind stepchildren Sean Patterson and Cherie-Lynn Scott along with sisters-in-law Margaret Christie and Heidi Bach. She valued relationships with nieces and nephews including Paige Melehes and Kyle Melehes while enjoying strong friendships with Kathy and Bob Pozza.

Susan Gillen’s life represented dedication, leadership, and kindness. Those who knew her will continue to feel inspired by what she accomplished during her time here. The community feels a deep loss but celebrates a life filled with significant achievements and lasting friendships.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, June 22, 2026 from 3-5 pm at Brock and Visser Funeral Home (845 Devonshire Ave). In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Sakura House
