Tito-Dante Marimpietri will take on the role of mayor in Oshawa after winning decisively, based on the city’s unofficial results page.
The city and regional councillor outperformed a total of nine candidates – including two fellow councillors – to succeed the outgoing Mayor Dan Carter.
There wasn’t any polling data available for Oshawa leading up to the election. However, Marimpietri achieved a clear win with 38.3 per cent of the votes, while his nearest rival, Coun. Jim Lee, garnered 22.2 per cent.
“The future of Oshawa begins tonight,” Marimpietri shared with CBC’s Christian D’Avino after the unofficial results were revealed.

In other areas of Durham Region, unofficial results from Tuesday morning indicate that incumbent mayors have been re-elected in most contests, including those in Whitby and Pickering.
Further north, challengers managed to unseat incumbent mayors in two municipalities – notably Clarington where Mayor Adrian Foster has held his position since 2010.
Oshawa’s Future: A Message from Its New Mayor
Currently representing Ward 2 in Oshawa, Marimpietri also chairs the city’s economic and development services committee.
Throughout his campaign for mayor, Marimpietri highlighted his two decades’ worth of experience in local politics. He first joined Oshawa City Council back in 2003.
As chair of economic and development services, he has advocated for Oshawa to lead in Canada’s national defence sector.
He led an initiative directed at the federal government to showcase various assets within the city – such as developable lands in north Oshawa and manufacturing capabilities at General Motors’ plant there.
WATCH | spoke with Marimpietri about his national defence pitch earlier this year:
Can Oshawa really become a hub for national defence?
After GM’s job cuts earlier this year, local leaders believe that making Oshawa a hub for national defence is possible. CBC’s Rochelle Rochelle Raveendran explains what resources are available.
Marimpietri discussed these resources during an interview with right after receiving the unofficial election results and directly told Prime Minister Mark Carney that “You’re going to get a phone call.”
He also extended an invitation to Ontario Premier Doug Ford to visit Oshawa.
“We’re the real deal,” he remarked.
Marimpietri has committed to tackling homelessness within the city-an issue that became prominent during his campaign. Currently, Oshawa has the highest rate of homelessness in Durham Region.
He mentioned plans to establish a “formal framework of alignment and accountability” aimed at bringing together various partners-including all levels of government-to make coordinated decisions regarding homelessness issues.
