Marina Mabrey matched the WNBA’s single-game scoring record by putting up 53 points, thanks to a hot 9-of-18 from beyond the arc, while the Toronto Tempo easily defeated the Los Angeles Sparks 125-97 on Thursday.
Earlier this season, Mabrey tied the league’s three-point record when she made nine shots in a win against Connecticut on June 19, where she also set a then-career-high of 37 points. On Thursday, she surpassed that mark three quarters in with 39 points and added another 14 to equal A’ja Wilson (2023) and Liz Cambage (2018) for the all-time scoring record.
Tempo coach Sandy Brondello told her team after the game, in a video shared by Prime Sports, “I’ve been doing this for quite some time, and even I haven’t seen a shooting performance like that, Marina. It was amazing. You know who you are, you know what you can do and the confidence that you have is great.“
Toronto (9-9) took control early and never looked back, starting off with a quick 19-6 run in under four minutes fueled by three-pointers from Mabrey, Maria Conde, and Julie Allemand. The Tempo built their lead to as much as 35 points later on, finishing with an impressive shooting percentage of 20 of 42 (47.6%) from long range as a team.
Conde went 3 of 5 from beyond the arc for a total of 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Allemand hit all three of her attempts from deep for another 13 points while also recording a career-best 14 assists. Laura Juskaite contributed with ten points and led the game with twelve rebounds coming off the bench.
Mabrey’s nine made three-pointers were almost as many as Los Angeles (8-9) managed as a team. The Sparks only managed to shoot 11 of 38 (28.9%) from outside.
Aside from Nneka Ogwumike, Dearica Hamby, and Rae Burrell, there wasn’t much offense coming from the Sparks.
Ogwumike and Hamby each scored 21 points while Burrell added another seventeen. Ogwumike also pulled down seven rebounds while Hamby led her team with nine boards.

Starting guards Erica Wheeler and Ariel Atkins found themselves in foul trouble for Los Angeles while their bench missed rotational forward Cameron Brink due to an ankle injury.
The Sparks came into Thursday’s matchup having split two games against expansion Tempo last month in L. A., both competitive matchups. However, they struggled without their leading scorer Kelsey Plum who was out due to a leg injury sustained during Sunday’s win over New York.
