Mrs. Sheila Payne, age 81 years, a resident of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital on August 21, 2026, after a long 16-year fight with cancer.
Born on March 17, 1945, she grew up on Rosslyn Road. At just 17, she met and married Fred, the love of her life. They raised their family at Twin City Crossroads. Due to health issues in their late 70s, they moved into the city; first to Mc Kellar Place and then to Jasper Place. Sheila was known for her “no B. S.” attitude and her sharp sense of humor that left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. She truly was a force of nature! Sheila embraced life fully and made many lifelong friends along the way.
Sheila is survived by her husband of 63 years, Fred; her children Michael (Michele), Angela, Cathy (Craig); grandchildren Braeden, Kyle (Hannah), Tara, Eric, Alana (James), Dakota (Blayze), Dylan; great-grandchildren Olive, June, Emmery, Elliott; aunt Dorothy Bechta and special cousin Mike Tomeck (Coral). Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Sheila was predeceased by her parents Peter and Florence Kostyk; siblings Anne, Janet, Fred and Rocky; as well as her great-grandson Yorick (at birth).
Cremation has taken place. As per Sheila’s wishes, there will be no service held. If desired, donations to Our Kids Count would be greatly appreciated instead of flowers.
