Funny, charming, kind-hearted, strong, and generous are just a few words that capture the essence of George Frederick England, who passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026 at the age of 85.
George has joined his beloved wife of 60 years, Nancy (2024), in Heaven. His daughter Nancy (John) Sulja, son Bill (Beth) England, and grandchildren Olivia (Danijel), Emma, Grant and William will remember him with endless joy and gratitude. He is also survived by his nephew Terry (Carol) England; he was predeceased by his niece Kathie Menogue (2013). Many extended family members, friends and neighbors will hold him close in their hearts. George was born on March 30, 1941 at home in Windsor’s west end to Annie (1977) and Robert (1983) England. He was the last surviving sibling in his family: brothers Robert (1986), Gerry (2021), Raymond (2005), and sister Dawn (2023).
After graduating from Herman Collegiate Institute where he shone in hockey and football, George went to teacher’s college. He began a fulfilling 35-year career in education as a teacher at Walker Public School-where he met Nancy-and Glenwood. He served as vice-principal at Roseland, King Edward, Roseville and Dougall schools before becoming principal at Princess Elizabeth. Proudly Canadian to the core, George always mentioned that the England family hailed from Northern Ireland. He loved cheering for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Blue Jays, and Toronto Argonauts. Among his proudest moments were completing three Detroit marathons (1984, 1987, 1991), carrying the Olympic torch locally and representing Canada during the Opening Ceremonies of the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary.
Special thanks go out to Dr. James Colapinto, Dr. Annie Kanwar along with the nursing staff of 5 North at Windsor Regional Hospital – Met Campus. We also appreciate the care received from the Dr. Y. Emara Centre palliative care unit for all their incredible support.
Visitation will occur at Windsor Chapel – South Chapel (3048 Dougall Ave., 519-253-7236) on Sunday May 24th 2026 from 2:00pm until the Chapel Service begins at 4:00pm. Instead of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Transition to Betterness (T2B) or the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society.
