ST. THOMAS, ONT. – Power Co Canada has recently shared that it has awarded two significant contracts for the $7 billion gigafactory in St. Thomas. These contracts involve the structural steel and foundations for the first cell production building and essential work on the site.
While specific financial details weren’t revealed, Steelcon Group of Companies will handle the structural steel tasks, and Magil Construction Canada Inc. has been chosen to take care of the foundations.
This development prepares for groundbreaking at the location in just a few weeks, according to a statement, marking another advancement for Canada’s largest electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility. The factory itself will cover an area equal to 210 football fields, while the overall industrial park will span 850 football fields.
The gigafactory is planned to have six production blocks capable of producing up to 90 gigawatt hours – sufficient for around one million EVs each year, as noted on the project website.
Regarding the latest contracts, Steelcon plans to employ 500 workers in their fabrication facilities focusing on creating steel components for this project. At its peak operation onsite, about 100 workers will be involved in installing the steel. More than 30 of these workers are expected to come from nearby London and southwestern Ontario.

According to Power Co, Magil Construction Canada Inc.’s foundation work represents one of the largest foundation packages seen so far in southwestern Ontario. This includes constructing foundations for three buildings with a combined floor area of 850,000 square feet.
