David Clyde

With heavy hearts, the family of David Clyde shares the news of his passing at 84 on January 29, 2026. While there is sadness, they find comfort in knowing he left this world peacefully surrounded by his loving children.

He is survived by his dear daughters Ruth Henry (Ron), Colleen Mc Kee (George), and Lena Gervais (Rick). His grandchildren Daniel (Megan), Michael (Kendra), Natalie (Eric) Mc Diarmid, Amber Henry, Ansley Thornton, Kit Thornton-Adams (Chris), Zachary (Cassandra), Jadzia, and Xavier Gervais will miss him greatly. He is also remembered fondly by his great-grandchildren Lily, Maya, Ezri, Ruby, Owen, Fiona, Tyson, Rosalie and Atticus.

His siblings Albert, Sean (Margaret), Doreen (David), Charlie, and Norma (John) along with many nieces and nephews across Canada, Ireland and Northern Ireland will cherish their memories of him.

He was predeceased by his parents John and Hester Clyde, his eldest sister Ruth Jackson, and his infant grandson Ryan Clyde Gervais.

David moved to Canada from Banbridge in Northern Ireland in 1961. He settled in Almonte where he worked as a painter/decorator. David continued to pursue his passion for bagpipes in Canada. He played in various bands including the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa and played a key role in organizing the first North Lanark Highland Games. In 1981 he started the Mac Eóin-Ramsay Pipe Band with local pipers and many of his students. He wrote several bagpipe tunes and the Heritage Collection Vol 1 in 2011.

Recently some of David’s former students from the 1990s revived Mac Eóin-Ramsay. Their early successes brought him much joy as they reflected his love for piping; they honored him by choosing the David Clyde tartan for their band uniform which he designed in 2011. This tartan was officially recognized by the Scottish Register of Tartans in 2018. The family appreciates that such talented players are continuing David’s musical influence.

In later years when David faced Parkinson’s disease challenges, he handled it with dignity while always showing appreciation to those who cared for him. The family thanks the staff on the 7th floor at Carling View Manor for their exceptional care during his stay there especially during his final days.

A visitation will be held at Alan R Barker Funeral Home located at 19 Mc Arthur Avenue Carleton Place on Friday February 6th 2026 from 3:00-5:00 pm followed by a celebration of life with music from the Mac Eóin-Ramsay pipe band starting at 6 pm at Carleton Place Legion.

If you’d like to contribute donations can be made to Mac Eoin Ramsay Pipe Band via e-transfer to mrpb. ottawa@gmail. com or to Royal Canadian Legion Carleton Place Branch 192.
