York Regional Police report that a husband and father of four was shot and killed inside his Vaughan home early Sunday morning, right in front of his children.

Officers responded to a call at a residence on Andreeta Drive near Major Mac Kenzie Drive and Highway 27 around 1 a. m. on Aug. 31. Upon arrival, they found Abdul Aleem Farooqi, 46, suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

City News initially shared that Farooqi lost his life while his children were present during the violent break-in.

“[One of the alleged intruders] had the daughters at gunpoint. He took them upstairs. That is when [Farooqi] noticed that another intruder was physically confronting him. He was just shot, right there,” said family friend Ehsan Malik. “As far as I know, he shot him twice.”

“It happened in front of his daughters. The intruder was bringing all three daughters upstairs at gunpoint. They locked his son in a bedroom while his wife attempted to escape,” added Malik.

Authorities suspect that three male suspects, dressed in dark clothing with their faces concealed, broke into the home before fleeing the area. No arrests have been made yet.

“Currently, we believe this house was specifically targeted for robbery,” stated Paolo Fiore from York Regional Police’s homicide unit. “This was purely for monetary gain. Mr. Farooqi wasn’t involved in any criminal activities; he was well-respected, an excellent family man loved by his community.”

The police are urging neighbors to check their security cameras and reach out to investigators with any information.

“We are working on establishing the motive,” Fiore said. “We think [the suspects] entered the house to steal valuables.”

Vigil Held in Memory of Vaughan Man

Police confirmed there was another home invasion in York Region around the same time on Aug. 31. Investigators are examining evidence to see if these two incidents are connected.

A gathering of over 200 people took place in Vaughan on Monday night as community members came together to honor Farooqi after hearing about the tragic incident.

Friends told City News that Farooqi dedicated himself to being a loving husband and father who actively engaged with his neighborhood.

“He was truly one of the noblest men,” said family friend Wasib Dheendsa. “He represented everything good about humanity perfectly; it’s tragic but not surprising that he went down as a hero-someone who protected his family until the very end.”

“He exemplified faith, charity, and community,” another family friend remarked while expressing how deeply affected everyone is by his passing.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford commented on this situation during a press conference on Tuesday.

“This innocent man had his doors kicked down in the middle of the night,” Premier Ford stated. “And these scumbags shot him right before his kids.”

Victim’s Brother Shares Thoughts with City News After Tragedy

Naeem Farooqi shared with City News that he had hosted Abdul for dinner just hours before Aleem’s tragic death inside their Vaughan home.

“He spent last night at my house; we enjoyed dinner together and he left late evening,” Naeem recalled sadly. “I now realize it turned out to be his last meal with those he loved.”

“I waved goodbye as he left.. and that was it.”

York Regional Police continue treating this case as a targeted homicide but haven’t provided details regarding possible motives yet.

“I just saw a school bus pass by unloading kids earlier today; I wondered whether my niece or nephew should have been aboard that bus [Tuesday]. Their lives will never be quite same again,” Naeem expressed further.

Officers were called to a residence near Andreeta Drive and Barons Street around 1 a. m., Aug.31st. Upon arrival , they discovered Abdul Aleem Farooqi , age forty-six , suffering from severe injuries. Unfortunately , he did not survive. Keep it Factual
