NHL teams have a strong incentive to finish last in 2025-26, as a generational talent could be too appealing to ignore.

The Toronto Maple Leafs might receive some troubling news regarding their top prospect for the 2026 NHL Draft, Gavin Mc Kenna.

However, this situation doesn’t directly relate to the expected #1 pick in this year’s draft. It actually concerns a family member of his.

According to reports from The Daily Collegian and Nittany Sports Now, Gavin Mc Kenna’s mother, Krystal, is facing criminal charges related to an alleged incident involving providing alcohol to minors.

As reported, Krystal Mc Kenna has been charged with selling or giving alcohol to minors during an event on January 31, 2026. This incident reportedly occurred in State College, PA.

Interestingly, that was also the night when Mc Kenna was allegedly involved in a bar fight. This altercation resulted in Mc Kenna being arrested and charged with felony aggravated assault, according to court documents.

The charges against Gavin Mc Kenna were later dropped. However, he still faces a misdemeanor assault charge.

Meanwhile, Krystal Mc Kenna will have a preliminary hearing on June 3 as indicated by the court docket. It’s unclear what the next steps will be from here.

If found guilty, the potential Maple Leafs selection could face anywhere from 1 to 5 years behind bars along with fines. Toronto will likely want updates on how Mc Kenna’s legal issues are progressing as they consider drafting him this year.

Maple Leafs Might Reconsider Choosing Mc Kenna Due to Legal Concerns

Legally speaking, Gavin Mc Kenna is navigating a tricky situation. Even though he’s dealing with a misdemeanor charge, the possibility of incarceration could deter the Maple Leafs from selecting him.

This doesn’t mean that Mc Kenna is a “criminal.” That’s far from true. In reality, anyone can find themselves facing charges during a bar scuffle. The key concern will be the potential jail time that could affect his future career in hockey.

In extreme scenarios where he might receive two or even three years of imprisonment could seriously impact his path in professional hockey.

The Maple Leafs organization and fans are hoping for favorable outcomes regarding the charges against the Mc Kennas. Often enough, investigations turn up evidence that clears those who are accused.

If that’s not what happens though, there may be significant questions for Toronto moving forward.

Toronto May Shift Focus to Another Player

A safer route for the Maple Leafs could be shifting their focus toward another prospect instead. Ivar Stenberg’s name is starting to gain traction among discussions. While Stenberg may not be viewed as the most exciting option in the draft pool, he could present solid value for Toronto.

Pundits have compared Stenberg to a more physical version of Mitch Marner. That’s an excellent comparison given how much the Maple Leafs have missed Marner’s contributions on ice this season.

Additonally, it wouldn’t be out of character for them to opt for a defenseman with their top pick. Chase Reid has generated considerable buzz recently as well. Given how desperately Toronto needs top defensive talent right now, choosing Reid or even Keaton Verhoeff wouldn’t seem unreasonable at all.

Please stay tuned for updates regarding the legal matters surrounding the Mc Kennas. Here’s hoping this entire situation turns out just fine for everyone involved!
