Volunteers at Morrison Sports Park in Oakville are back at it, cleaning up after more vandalism, which they say adds to the already tough workload for their small team that looks after the community space.
Don Staples, a dedicated volunteer at the park, mentioned that the latest incident happened just a few days ago and involved several acts of destruction.
Someone set fire to pallets in the park’s fire pit and left behind a mess. During the same overnight episode, the bathroom door was kicked in, splitting it and breaking the lockset. The main building also faced an attempt to break-in, although whoever did it failed to get inside.
“We have to repair the doors and buy parts for the door set,” noted Staples.

Staples estimated that replacing the hardware would run around $100, not counting the volunteer labor needed to finish up the repairs.
“This place is run by two old volunteers,” he said. “We’re becoming old men, and we don’t need all this extra work.”
He expressed how frustrating repeated vandalism is because Morrison Sports Park relies almost entirely on volunteers instead of paid staff.

Previous Damage Still Needs Fixing
This recent incident follows months after another act of vandalism left significant damage to the park’s entrance sign. According to Staples, that sign is still lying on the ground since volunteers are waiting on a new supporting post before they can put it back up. The vandalism hasn’t stopped even though the sign has been out of commission. The entrance sign at Morrison Sports Park was heavily damaged in an act of vandalism in April 2026. Volunteers say the sign remains unrepaired and has since sustained additional damage. The ongoing damage has led discussions among park committee members about possibly setting up some kind of security system. Staples mentioned no decisions have been reached yet as volunteers are still figuring out what type of surveillance would be best suited for their property. “It’s certainly something that we’re floating around,” he said. In the meantime, volunteers continue with park maintenance while facing a wet summer that’s made regular tasks like mowing and trimming much harder. Morrison Sports Park also includes a small campground; however, Staples noted it’s only occasionally used by people attending weddings or family events or those working temporarily in town.
