Hitachi has revealed plans for a factory worth nearly $500 million that aims to create many skilled jobs and enhance local manufacturing. CTV London’s Sean Irvine reports.

In the middle of a trade dispute with the United States, a global energy firm is making a significant investment in London, Ontario.

Hitachi Energy announced a $479-million investment for a new transformer insulation plant, with backing from both federal and provincial governments.

The facility will cover 226,000 square feet (21,000 square meters) and will be located at Huron Street and Veterans Memorial Parkway.

“This new facility will create over 100 permanent skilled manufacturing and engineering jobs,” said Carla Vicente of Hitachi Energy Canada.

The combined contribution from the federal and provincial governments amounts to $50 million.

“More than 20,000 tonnes of wood fibre will be transformed into electric grid pressboard which will strengthen our domestic supply chain as well as our forest sector,” said federal Industry Minister Melanie Joly during a news conference at the location.

Ontario Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli stated that this facility will be Canada’s first transformer pressboard factory and the largest of its kind globally.

Ontario Energy and Mines Minister Stephen Lecce emphasized that global thinking is central to this investment.

“We’re creating an end-to-end supply chain made in Canada by Canadians for Canadians; I believe this showcases how we can stand up for what’s best for Canada.”

While construction is already underway, the factory isn’t expected to open until late 2028.

This project marks Hitachi Energy’s second initiative in London. Last year they acquired Canduct Industries which manufactures cooling equipment for transformers.

Hitachi Energy representatives noted that site easements and access to electrical power were key factors in deciding to build here.

Mayor Josh Morgan highlighted how crucial reliable energy infrastructure is for attracting major investments like this one.

“Safe, secure power along with solid power infrastructure are vital – absolutely vital – for these kinds of investments.”

Hitachi Energy assures that they are on track for completion despite any possible shifts in economic circumstances.

“We have a very solid foundation to ensure that the factory is ready on time. Hitachi Energy and Hitachi are committed long-term,” said Bruno Melles, CEO of Hitachi Energy’s Transformers business unit.
