HAMILTON – Hamilton police report that they have charged a man with 19 counts following an incident where he accidentally shot himself during a failed home invasion.

Authorities say they responded to shooting reports near the city center on Saturday night and discovered a man suffering from serious gunshot wounds.

At the location, officers found a blood trail leading to an abandoned firearm, which investigators believe was the weapon involved in the shooting.

Police determined that the injured individual had actually shot himself while attempting to break into a home.

The 38-year-old suspect from Hamilton faces charges including breaking and entering, criminal harassment, and multiple firearms offenses.

According to police, the man received treatment at a local medical facility and is now in custody.

This report by The Canadian Press was first May 3, 2026.
