York Regional Police say they are using outreach and education to address suspected counterfeit sales
York Regional Police carried out a “pro-active” patrol yesterday in Markham at stores thought to be selling counterfeit items.
Officers visited shops near Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue East to inform shop owners about the legal repercussions of selling fake products, according to a news release.
“Officers conducted foot patrols, spoke with vendors and distributed information cards in three languages. The initiative focused on education and prevention, including consequences of selling counterfeit trademark goods,” police said.
York Regional Police is reminding vendors that police and municipal partners may conduct visible patrols and store visits in areas where counterfeit goods are suspected.
Vendors must know their suppliers and keep records to verify the authenticity of the products they sell.
“If you sell branded goods, you must be able to show where the items came from and keep supporting documents such as invoices, receipts and shipping records,” police added.
