The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have announced that a death south of Ottawa over the weekend is now being treated as a homicide.

On Tuesday, OPP confirmed that the individual whose body was discovered in a home in Spencerville on Saturday was Chelsea Swinwood.

The 37-year-old had been reported missing after last being seen on August 22 in nearby Prescott, according to the OPP’s statement to .

No suspects or arrests have been made public yet, but the OPP mentioned they believe Swinwood’s death is an isolated incident “with no signs of a broader threat.”

“This is an ongoing investigation and investigators continue to gather and assess information,” spokesperson Sgt. Erin Cranton said via email.

‘Incredibly difficult time,’ mayor says

Rory Deschamps, the mayor of the Township of Edwardsburgh Cardinal – which includes Spencerville – expressed that it’s an “incredibly difficult time” for the community.

While he hasn’t spoken directly to Swinwood’s family, he stated his thoughts are with them.

“I would offer up [that] if anybody does have relevant information, to make sure that they contact our local OPP,” Deschamps mentioned. “And it’s important that the person who did this is held accountable for their actions.”

The OPP has informed residents in Spencerville to expect police activity as part of their investigation there.
