Researchers have confirmed that a tornado hit a community southeast of London, Ont., following severe thunderstorms earlier this week.

The Northern Tornadoes Project at Western University states that an initial investigation using videos and radar data has provided the “necessary evidence” that a tornado touched down in Derwent on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, project researchers shared in a social media post that a team will go to the area to assess the intensity and path of the tornado.

Director Dave Sills mentioned earlier that while many people were impacted by the storm, most of the damage has been minor.

The Northern Tornadoes Project indicated that another storm east of London was due to an EF1 downburst with wind gusts reaching up to 145 km/h.

An EF1 is classified as a moderate storm where a strong of air rapidly descends from a thunderstorm and strikes the ground, creating destructive straight-line winds.

This month saw Canada’s first tornado of 2026, rated as the lowest on the intensity scale, occurring north of London according to the Northern Tornadoes Project.

This report by The Canadian Press was first May 21, 2026.
