A road worker has tragically lost his life after being hit by a dump truck in Pickering on Monday afternoon.
While performing asphalt repairs on Peter Matthews Drive, a dump truck that was reversing southbound struck a 31-year-old worker. The victim was taken to the hospital but unfortunately did not survive his injuries. The driver of the dump truck stayed at the scene and cooperated with the authorities.
Durham Regional Police’s West Division responded to the incident involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Peter Matthews Drive and Alexander Knox Drive just after 2:30 p. m. on Monday.
The DRPS Collision Investigation Unit, along with members from the transportation ministry and the Ministry of Labour, arrived at the scene to carry out an investigation.
The surrounding roads – located just south of Highway 407 in north Pickering – were closed for several hours while evidence was gathered.
The identity of the worker has not yet been released.
If anyone has cell phone, dash cam, or surveillance footage, or any information regarding this incident, please reach out to D/Cst. Kollaard of the Collision Investigation Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5267.
This marks the second fatality involving a construction vehicle hitting a worker in less than a week; last Thursday morning, a 42-year-old traffic agent was killed when he was struck by a dump truck near Millwood Road and Overlea Boulevard in East York.
Police reported that as the truck made a left turn from Millwood onto Overlea, it collided with the agent who was directing traffic at that intersection.
