Wet Conditions Delay Golf Course Openings

Flood warnings and water condition alerts have been the main talk of spring in the Waterloo Region this year.

With rain still pouring, there aren’t many places for it to go. This has led to some tough conditions on Kitchener’s municipal golf courses as they get ready for summer.

The City’s Manager of Sport Development and Golf, Lisa Collins, mentioned that the soggy ground has pushed back their opening date, and they’re uncertain when they’ll be able to start.

“At this point, we’re keeping it kind of broad. What we’re going ahead with is, given the ongoing wet conditions, we’ve made the decision to delay our opening slightly. Protecting turf health early in the season is critical.”

Collins said teams have been doing everything possible to ensure the courses are prepared when they finally can open.

“I do want to give a huge shout-out to our grounds and turf maintenance teams. They’ve been working incredibly hard behind the scenes to get the course in the best possible shape despite challenging conditions.”

It seems all that effort has paid off. Just a day after expressing uncertainty about their opening timeline, Kitchener announced plans to open both Rockway and Doon Valley courses, weather permitting.

Collins noted players should expect some temporary limitations.

“Early season restrictions would likely be related to cart usage. If conditions pose a risk to turf health, carts may be restricted temporarily. We recognize that’s not ideal and we’re working to avoid that.”

If Mother Nature plays nice, Doon Valley and Rockway golf courses could welcome players as soon as mid to late next week.

More Exciting Events Coming This Summer

This year is looking big for Kitchener Golf with several major events lined up this season.

The Ontario Golf U13 and U15 division qualifiers will take place at Doon Valley on July 14th.

Doon Valley will also host golf competitions during the Ontario Summer Games from July 30th through August 2nd.

Kitchener Golf offers various learn-to-golf programs including its Golf Fore Life initiative which allows golfers with dementia to enjoy time on the course with a trained caddy.
