Federal meteorologists have put out a severe thunderstorm watch for Toronto and much of southern Ontario, warning that wind gusts could reach up to 90 km/h.

In a watch statement released by Environment and Climate Change Canada on Saturday, they indicated that heavy rain and quarter-sized hail might affect regions Saturday afternoon as part of an approaching weather system.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” the statement said.

“Local utility outages are possible.”

The Greater Toronto Area, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, Barrie and Peterborough are among the areas included in the severe thunderstorm watch.

Meteorologists have also issued a severe thunderstorm warning for specific communities like Orillia as well as regions north of Belleville.
