After U. S. President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America, local utility providers swiftly updated their outage maps to honor Canada’s Indigenous heritage.
Hydro One reported that its outage map briefly showed Lake America on Sunday due to a problem with a third-party mapping service. Once the issue was discovered, the company stated it was fixed that same evening.
Utilities Kingston’s IT team found and resolved the problem by Monday morning.
Google Maps adjusted its platform to display Lake America for U. S. users based on official data from the U. S. Geographical Names Information System. Other mapping services like Apple Maps and Map Quest initially opted not to implement the change or took different approaches.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford strongly opposed the renaming. Premier Ford revealed a large sign stating “Lake Ontario Now and Always” along the Canadian shoreline in Winona, Ont.
