Authorities believe an older man who was “new to the area” was hit and killed by at least one vehicle while walking on the QEW in Hamilton late Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police are looking for help from the public as they investigate this tragic incident. They want to locate multiple drivers who may not have realized they struck a person just after midnight in the Niagara-bound lanes of the busy highway near Fruitland Road, in the Stoney Creek area of Hamilton.

According to police, the pedestrian, who was declared dead at the scene, was hit by at least one vehicle while walking on the QEW. No other injuries were reported.

The man has not yet been positively identified, but OPP believes he is an “elderly male who was new to the area.”

In a news release issued on Sunday, police noted that the man “was struck by a vehicle initially that stopped and may have been struck by additional vehicles that did not remain at the scene.”

One of those vehicles believed to have hit him but left is thought to be a Honda, based on debris found at the site.

“This vehicle would have sustained damage to the front driver’s side; the driver may not know what they struck,” police mentioned. They’re urging that driver and any others who might have passed through around that time to come forward.

Police emphasized that “foul play is not suspected, but investigators would like to speak with all involved drivers to assist them in this investigation.”

The QEW was closed for some time during the investigation, but all lanes have since reopened.

If you witnessed anything or have information about this incident, please call Burlington OPP at 905-681-2511 or 1-888-310-1122, or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
