Five children lost their lives, and six more were injured in a two-vehicle accident in rural Ontario on Friday night.
The Ontario Provincial Police reported that at around 7:30 p. m. in Mapleton Township, located northwest of Guelph, a van carrying 10 people collided with an SUV that had one occupant at the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12.
Authorities state that the five deceased children – four girls and one boy – were between the ages of 4 and 12. All victims were part of the same family, though police did not disclose how they were related.
Four adults and one infant suffered serious injuries, as did the driver of the SUV.
At least three individuals were airlifted to different trauma centers, while others were taken to nearby hospitals.
OPP Superintendent Dwight Thib expressed gratitude to the “good samaritans” who assisted first responders, noting that the victims received “immediate care” on-site.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford shared his thoughts for “the families and loved ones of the children who were killed in the tragic collision that took place yesterday in Mapleton Township, and with those currently being cared for in hospital.”
“This heartbreaking loss is being felt across the community and the entire province,” he wrote in a social media post shared Saturday afternoon. “Let’s all stand together with those who are grieving during this terrible time.”
