Ontario is speeding things up.

The province is increasing speed limits on an additional 938 kilometres of highways, raising the standard from 100 km/h to 110 km/h, starting later this month.

This change adds to previous adjustments made in 2022 and 2024.

Once implemented, almost 89 percent of Ontario’s highway network will be operating at 110 km/h, a jump from the current 43 percent.

“Our government is helping to get drivers where they’re going faster and safely,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation.

The rollout begins June 26, starting with sections of Highway 401 and 416 in eastern Ontario before expanding to other key routes like the QEW, 400, 401, 402, 403, 416 and 417.

With this updated speed limit in place, officials say drivers traveling from Sarnia to Toronto could save nearly 20 minutes. Meanwhile, those journeying from Toronto to Ottawa could save almost half an hour.

Officials emphasize that these highways weren’t selected randomly. They’ve been carefully studied and engineered for the higher speeds.
