A two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon has resulted in one death and left another person seriously injured, closing part of Highway 6 between Guelph and Fergus.
Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Const. Matthew Burton shared with that the incident was “an alleged head-on collision involving two SUVs and with two drivers involved.”
Officers responded to reports of the accident at the intersection of Highway 6 and Wellington Road 22 shortly after 12:15 p. m.
According to Burton, both vehicles were occupied only by their drivers.
The deceased driver, a 74-year-old man from Fergus, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other driver, an 82-year-old man from Elora, is in serious condition and has been airlifted to a trauma center.
“All roads within the vicinity of the intersection of Highway 6 and Wellington Road 22 are closed for the next several hours and the public is asked to use alternate routes,” a release by OPP said, adding there is no expected time for reopening.
“The public can expect it will be closed for the majority of the day and into the evening hours,” said Burton.
The closures are as follows:
Wellington Road 22 / 8th line is closed from Campbell Road to Wellington Road 7. Highway 6 is closed from Wellington Road 51 to 6th line within Ennotville.
The collision occurred in a construction zone.
OPP stated they are still in the early stages of their investigation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
