After spending five years in the United States, Jeanne had found some safety but dealt with constant anxiety. She asked me not to use her real name when sharing her story. She came to the U. S. on a temporary visa in July 2021 to visit family after experiencing a mugging in Port-au-Prince and witnessing gangs increasingly taking control of the city. The Biden administration had recently expanded Temporary Protected Status for Haitians-providing provisional residency, deportation protection, and work permits due to worsening security conditions back home. Just two days after Jeanne’s arrival, Haitian President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated while at home. Overstaying her visa, she applied for TPS and attempted to rebuild her life in North Carolina but never felt truly settled.
As President Trump campaigned for his return to office, he vowed to enforce an unprecedented immigration crackdown and spread unfounded rumors about Haitian migrants harming pets in Ohio. Soon after taking office again, he revoked TPS protections for Haiti which resulted in Jeanne losing her job. Fearful of leaving home and draining her savings just to stay afloat, she faced an uncertain future. A federal judge temporarily reinstated TPS protections in February 2026 following Trump’s initial decision but this relief ended when the Supreme Court sided with Trump later that June, making Jeanne one of about 300,000 Haitians unable to work legally while also facing potential detention or deportation by ICE. Online advice mostly echoed fear and hopelessness; meanwhile, relatives encouraged her to head north and join her brother in Canada.
Canada has rules that allow migrants with close family ties there to seek asylum upon entry; however, Jeanne feared making the nearly 900-mile trip northward toward the border because she’d heard ICE officers were checking buses and trains for documentation. A friend connected her with a driver who charged $700 for a one-way ride northward. “I was praying, crying, anxious, stressed. I couldn’t eat or drink or anything,” she recounted last week during our conversation at a Tim Hortons doughnut shop in Laval near Montreal. Reaching Canada safely felt like her only choice as violence raged on back home; social media feeds were full of reports about two schoolgirls kidnapped by armed gang members.
The journey took almost 22 hours by car but once at the border Canadian officials let her through into Quebec without issue. Arriving with “almost nothing,” Jeanne expressed immediate relief when seeing her brother who picked her up an hour later; she considered herself lucky compared to other Haitians fleeing ICE who often find themselves crossing into Canada through wooded paths.
