Even after announcing his resignation as premier of Quebec, François Legault has chosen to continue serving as MNA for L’Assomption until his term concludes.

There was some uncertainty about whether Legault would retain his seat once a new leader is appointed on April 12.

Christine Fréchette and Bernard Drainville are competing to take over leadership of the Coalition Avenir Québec – the party that Legault established in 2011 and has led since then.

The victor will also step into the role of the province’s next premier until the upcoming general election in October.

Legault’s office confirmed his decision to stay on through a statement given to Radio-Canada.

The statement mentions that Legault feels it’s his responsibility towards his constituents to remain, as he doesn’t want them to lack representation at the National Assembly.

According to the statement, one of his goals will be to utilize his remaining time in office to highlight some businesses within his riding as he wraps up his political journey.
