A police oversight agency is looking into an incident where officers in Halton Region shot and seriously injured a 23-year-old man during a traffic stop.

The SIU reports that Halton Regional Police were conducting the stop early Sunday when the driver approached the officers.

According to the watchdog, one officer fired at the man, hitting him multiple times.

Emergency medical personnel took him to a hospital, where he is currently in stable condition.

The SIU also noted that a woman was present in the vehicle at the time of the shooting but did not sustain any injuries.

This agency steps in for cases involving police actions that lead to serious injuries, deaths, claims of sexual assault, or instances of an officer using their firearm against someone.

This report by The Canadian Press was first March 8, 2026.
