Ontario Government Steps in to Oversee Peel School Board

Frustrated with the slow progress in addressing issues, the Ontario government has taken charge of the Peel District School Board (PDSB).

Education Minister Paul Calandra announced today (March 5) that a supervisor has been appointed to manage decisions at the board, effectively stripping elected trustees of their authority.

The PDSB oversees 262 schools and serves more than 148,000 students across Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon. It ranks among the largest school systems in Canada.

Calandra also stated that the province would gain control over the York Catholic District School Board.

“After careful review, it is clear that both Peel and York Catholic are facing serious challenges that they cannot resolve on their own,” said Calandra. “I have appointed supervisors to restore sound management, strengthen oversight and ensure every decision is focused on protecting student learning and success.”

He added that this decision responds to “serious concerns” regarding internal conflicts and long-term financial instability that could disrupt education and harm student performance.

In January, Calandra had temporarily placed the PDSB under provincial supervision to avoid a mid-year staffing change that might have caused uncertainty for parents, students, and educators. At that time, he hoped issues with the board could be resolved; however, today’s action indicates otherwise.

The Ontario government aims to make sure students are equipped for future job opportunities.

“These actions will help the province restore sound financial management at these boards and ensure that every dollar invested is preparing students with practical skills for good-paying, stable careers,” reads a statement from the Ministry of Education.

Heather Watt has been designated as supervisor for the PDSB. She brings over 20 years of experience in leadership roles within both public and private sectors.

This change means both local school boards now fall under provincial control.

Last June, Calandra similarly placed the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board under supervisory control due to what he described as poor financial management.
