Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon have agreed to contribute $5 million toward a $135 million renovation and upgrade plan, with an additional $20 million requested from the provincial government.

Toronto Metropolitan University’s School of Medicine began accepting students in Brampton last year, moving into the $48-million Bramalea Civic Centre, which was donated to the school by the city.

Brampton has also pledged $20 million for renovations. The federal government has provided $25 million, along with around $50 million from various donors, as reported by the Region of Peel.

However, the school is seeking more funding for its $135 million renovation project and is requesting a total of $25 million from Ontario and the Region of Peel.

This extra funding would be allocated to “core capital development,” which includes infrastructure for teaching, research, and training. According to a report, these funds will not support programs like the Integrated Health Centres that receive provincial backing.

A conditional donation of $5 million was unanimously approved by Peel Regional Council last month; however, this will only proceed if the province agrees to provide an additional $20 million in funding.

“Given the scope of the request, clear articulation of funding roles and responsibilities across partners will be important to ensure transparency, avoid perceptions of duplication, and strengthen accountability,” reads a report from the region.

The region hasn’t yet determined how it will fund its portion of the donation if the province approves it. This could potentially lead to a five-year property tax increase starting at 0.63 percent in the first year.

In addition to this donation request, Brampton City Council supports bringing wet lab facilities and a diabetes innovation hub to TMU. The university aims to create a facility that addresses the Greater Toronto Area’s “critical shortage” of wet labs-specialized spaces where researchers work with biological or chemical materials for biomedical studies.
