An Ontario man who exploited an 18-year-old girl and later got her pregnant was recently given just one more day in jail, adding to the time he’d already served.
The 47-year-old man admitted in Ontario’s Superior Court of Justice to recruiting her for sexual services between April 2015 and March 2018, as well as profiting from his actions despite knowing they were illegal. There is a publication ban on any details that could reveal the victim’s identity.
He had been in custody for 271 days prior to his sentencing. However, the judge acknowledged he had actually spent 557 days in pre-trial detention, mentioning that he was on house arrest bail for 596 days before being sentenced and endured tough conditions at a Milton, Ont., facility.
“He spent 44 days of his sentence in lockdown at the Maplehurst Detention Centre. He also faced triple bunking for 49 days. He deserves some leniency because of this fact. The awful conditions in that institution are well-known here,” Justice Michael Derstine noted in a recent ruling.
The court heard how the man convinced the woman to work with him in the sex industry back in 2015 when she was just 18 and he was already 38.
“The two engaged in sexual activity,” and she eventually consented to work for him, according to the ruling, which mentions they began cohabitating in Richmond Hill.
She was already involved in the sex trade before they met, said the judge, “and he exploited her youth and drug dependency to commit these crimes.”
She “worked out of Homewood Suites in Vaughan and other hotels nearby,” stated the ruling.
The man would drive her to these hotels or cover her Uber costs while supplying her with drugs.
She “handed over money earned through sex work” to him, as per the decision.
If she didn’t want to continue prostituting herself, he “would pressure her into working more to earn extra cash,” noted the ruling, which highlighted that she kept using drugs and alcohol during this time.
He took photographs of her “that appeared in sex trade s,” according to court documents.
She “eventually became pregnant with (the man’s) child,” it said.
While expecting their child, she moved into his family home.
He “persuaded (her) to keep working in the sex trade while pregnant and after giving birth by convincing her they needed money for their family,” stated the ruling.
The couple fought often until she ultimately left him.
“It’s agreed that during those two years she worked under (the man), she made at least $20,000 and gave all that money to him.”
When she first met him, she “was very vulnerable,” according to court documents.
“She felt like options were limited; initially believed what he told her. Now looking back, it’s clear how quickly his manipulation began. He criticized her looks by sending videos suggesting changes. He made her feel inadequate.”
The man’s remarks “caused years of insecurity and self-doubt,” mentioned the ruling.
“By the time she left him, grocery shopping caused anxiety attacks. His voice constantly echoed criticism within her mind; it shattered her confidence. His influence deepened her addiction by providing substances while normalizing this lifestyle throughout their relationship. Her bond with their daughter is strained now as sadly their child blames her for having a father who is incarcerated.”
The age difference between mother and daughter mirrors that between mother and father figure as described by her testimony.
“As a mother, I can’t imagine pursuing someone so young. It highlights even more clearly how predatory his behavior was. I was young and susceptible; this allowed me to be manipulated into isolation and exploitation for his gain,” shared the woman.
