Peel Regional Police reported on Sunday that a man has died after a canoe overturned in Heart Lake Conservation Area in Brampton, Ont., late Saturday night.

Police received the call about boaters in trouble around 9:30 p. m. on April 11.

Brampton Fire Department teams arrived quickly and began a search and rescue operation. They located a woman in the water, who had been in the capsized canoe. However, they did not find the man she was with right away.

“The conservation area here was closed,” stated Const. Tyler Bell-Morena with Peel police. “Nobody should’ve had access to the water; there certainly should not have been anybody out lake boating,” he added.

Rescue operations continued for several hours, and with assistance from the police’s marine unit, they recovered the body of the other boater Sunday afternoon.
