A new 100-kilometre trail is being developed that will stretch from Mississauga’s Lake Ontario shoreline, through Brampton, and northward beyond the Greater Toronto Area. This long-term project has recently reached a significant milestone as it nears the halfway point.
Last week, a new 40-metre pedestrian bridge was officially opened along the growing Credit Valley Trail at the Upper Credit Conservation Area in Caledon.
Credit Valley Conservation, which manages the area, referred to the new bridge as “a major new infrastructure project that will help connect the trail from the Credit River headwaters in Orangeville to Port Credit at Lake Ontario” in Mississauga.
The conservation authority emphasized that this recent development is “an important milestone towards creating the 100-kilometre continuous pathway through the Credit River Valley.”
CVC is responsible for safeguarding natural areas and waterways across Peel’s three municipalities and various other communities including Orangeville and parts of Dufferin County and Halton Hills.
“This new pedestrian bridge marks an important step forward in bringing the vision of the Credit Valley Trail to life,” said Terri Hamilton, CVC chief administrative officer. “By connecting the trail across the Credit River, this vital link makes it easier for people to experience the natural beauty of the Credit River Valley while strengthening connections between communities. This milestone reflects the power of partner collaborations and our shared commitment to building a connected, accessible trail for local residents and visitors alike.”
The ambitious plan to construct a 100-kilometre Credit Valley Trail began almost ten years ago and aims for completion by 2041, according to officials from CVC.
The trail currently spans 43 kilometres and is “taking shape,” CVC reported earlier this year. “Once complete, the Credit Valley Trail will be a 100-kilometre path from Dufferin County to Mississauga’s shoreline. It will connect people with nature as well as rich cultural experiences and Indigenous heritage through the Credit River Valley.”
CVC also mentioned its ongoing efforts to collaborate with municipalities, community groups, donors, and volunteers to make this trail a reality. United by a shared vision, they are constructing a path that protects nature while fostering connections and encouraging exploration of the Credit River Valley.

Since 2018, CVC has raised $5 million for trail development initiatives alongside land securement projects. Among their accomplishments are creating 17 park connections by linking existing parks with sections of this trail.
The conservation authority also stated they have successfully united over 110 community members alongside municipal and Indigenous partners “to help realize this shared vision.”
“Together we’re building more than just a trail. We’re creating lasting connections that link communities while respecting nature and offering experiences that encourage everyone to explore, protect and appreciate the Credit River Watershed.”
