Authorities say they still haven’t determined how many individuals were in a vehicle that reportedly failed to stop for police late Tuesday night, leading to a crash in a ditch before it sank into Lake Ontario.

An officer from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attempted to pull over the vehicle on Bath Road, just west of Kingston, Ont., around 10:55 p. m., according to information released Wednesday.

Multiple police units and search-and-rescue teams from Canadian Forces Base Trenton are currently engaged in efforts to locate anyone who might have been inside the car, OPP stated.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is also looking into the OPP’s actions during the incident, as the attempted traffic stop may have played a role in causing serious injury or death.

As of early Wednesday afternoon, Bath Road remains closed at County Road 21, where it transitions into Highway 33. This road is also referred to as Loyalist Parkway.

Employees at the nearby hydro plant will be permitted through, according to police.
