WASAGA BEACH – Over 1,500 residents, visitors, students, businesses, and community members have joined in discussions that are shaping the future of Wasaga Beach as the Town wraps up the second phase of engagement for its Destination Wasaga Master Plan.
“Destination Wasaga is about building the future of Wasaga Beach while protecting what makes this place special,” said Mayor Brian Smith. “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine our beachfront, strengthen our downtown, support local businesses, and create a destination that residents and visitors can be proud of for generations.”
The draft plan suggests lively gathering spots, adaptable parks and event spaces for every season, accessible boardwalks, a river marina, a world-class music hall (The Dard 2.0), and an iconic pedestrian bridge-all aimed at bringing people closer to the water, nature, and each other.
The newly revealed designs present a downtown and beachfront that is both timeless and forward-thinking, featuring:
Three signature corridors are proposed to help connect the waterfront with downtown, Nancy Island, and provincial parkland-creating a more seamless experience for residents and visitors alike.
Feedback has been utilized to refine developing ideas for the beachfront and downtown area. This includes draft planning suggestions, concept images, and long-term redevelopment options.
The second phase of engagement sought input on how future public spaces along the shoreline should be designed. Participation came through public sessions, online feedback tools, and workshops in schools.
Students from local schools also shared their ideas during classroom engagement sessions. The Town says these contributions will be included in the overall vision for waterfront areas and community spaces.
This planning work builds on earlier consultation phases as well as provincial backing for long-term redevelopment of the waterfront area-home to the world’s longest freshwater beach alongside surrounding dune systems.
The Town states that the Master Plan aims to guide future decisions regarding infrastructure improvements in public areas, tourism development initiatives, transportation connectivity enhancements, and environmental management throughout both beachfront areas and downtown.
Key priorities emerging from this plan include protecting shorelines; improving pedestrian routes; upgrading public spaces; and fostering year-round tourism along with economic activity.
A 50-foot mural showcasing student ideas is set to be unveiled June 19 at the Wasaga Stars Arena. The final version of the Master Plan is anticipated to be completed this summer which will lay out guidelines for future development decisions in both beachfront areas and downtown core.
