Closing Summary

Our live coverage is wrapping up now. In the meantime, you can check out all of our live US politics updates here.

Today, millions of voters made their way to polling stations across the nation for important primaries affecting various key gubernatorial, Senate and House races in six states: New Jersey, Iowa, South Dakota, Montana, New Mexico and California.

While the gubernatorial primary in California is still too close to call, several candidates have started to acknowledge that they won’t be advancing to the general election. San Jose mayor Matt Mahan, former congresswoman Katie Porter and Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa all conceded they will not move forward. Steve Hilton, Xavier Becerra and Tom Steyer are currently leading in the race for two nominations that will proceed to November’s general election. The primary elections in California are notoriously slow due to its vote-counting system – meaning it might take days or even weeks before we know the results of these competitive races.

In Tuesday’s intense primary for Los Angeles mayor, Karen Bass emerged with a lead but didn’t secure more than 50% of the vote; therefore she’ll need to defend her position in November’s general election. She’s likely going up against either Spencer Pratt, a former reality TV star, or city council member Nithya Raman.

Iowa state representative Josh Turek has secured the Democratic nomination for an open US Senate seat – setting him up for a showdown against Ashley Hinson in November’s general election. Hinson is a former television anchor turned state senator who was backed by Donald Trump and retiring senator Joni Ernst.

Adam Hamawy claimed the Democratic nomination for New Jersey’s 12th congressional district, positioning this army doctor and newcomer to politics against Republican Gregg Mele in November’s general election. Hamawy decided to run after returning from a medical mission in Gaza back in 2024 where he met congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, who announced her retirement in November 2025.

Deb Haaland has won the Democratic nomination for governor in New Mexico. If she wins in November’s general election, Haaland would make history as the first Native American woman governor elected nationwide.

Christina Bohannan snagged the Democratic nomination for Iowa’s 1st congressional district. She’ll face off against incumbent Republican congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks come November.

Zach Lahn narrowly clinched the Republican nomination for governor and will go head-to-head with Democrat Rob Sand during Iowa’s general election this November. Five Republicans were competing for this chance following retiring Republican governor Kim Reynolds’ departure from office.

Former Navy helicopter pilot Rebecca Benett took home the Democratic nomination for New Jersey’s 7th congressional district and will challenge Republican congressman Tom Kean Jr. during the general election. Kean has been absent from Congress since March due to health issues but stated on social media that he feels “more energized than ever” and plans to “be completely transparent as to the nature of my medical condition” upon his return “in a matter of weeks.”

As Americans cast their votes today, Donald Trump offered congratulations and endorsements to his favored candidates across both domestic races and abroad. Just one day after Colombian voters picked right-wing candidate Abelardo de la Espriella alongside leftist senator Iván Cepeda for a runoff later this month, Trump voiced support for de la Espriella.

The US Supreme Court ruled today that Alabama may utilize a revised congressional map that removes one of its two majority-black districts during this year’s midterm elections; this decision came through a narrow 6-3 ruling. It marks one of their most significant rulings since striking down part of the Voting Rights Act back in late April.

Scott Wiener continues his campaign aiming to succeed Nancy Pelosi when she steps down at term end; he’s surpassed fellow Democrat Connie Chan-a San Francisco supervisor endorsed by Pelosi-in votes received thus far.

The highly competitive gubernatorial race remains unresolved with initial outcomes indicating fierce competition among multiple candidates vying for top positions.

My colleague Lauren Gambino reports:

As many ballots are yet uncounted , three frontrunners are evident: Republican Steve Hilton along with Democrats Xavier Becerra and Tom Steyer. With clear enough results available , two Democrats – San Jose mayor Matt Mahan along with former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa – have acknowledged their defeats shortly after polls closed.

Yet there’s potentiality given how things can shift over days or weeks ahead. In California , where mail-in voting remains popular accompanied by thorough ballot verification processes , it could take days until we figure out which two candidates advance from each race. Additionally , numerous Democrats intentionally retained their ballots until last minute causing further delays statewide.Share

In an address via video message , former Congresswoman Katie Porter accepted her defeat concerning her aspirations towards California governorship.

“Running a race like this isn’t easy , and coming up short is hard , but democracy is worth doing hard things for,” she said.

While it’s still premature determining which candidates progress toward runoff elections regarding California’s gubernatorial contest , both Steve Hilton & Xavier Becerra have been delivering optimistic speeches at their respective gatherings tonight.

Thankful towards Donald Trump’s endorsement during remarks made within Orange County venue ; Hilton expressed optimism around his chances asserting them as “looking good” adding they’d “got everything necessary toward transforming this state into greatness again.”

Conversely while addressing supporters Becerra shared personal narratives revolving around being raised by immigrant parents expressing desires leading such state capable of making improbable feats seem inevitable.” Once considered underdog throughout race trajectory; Becerra presently finds himself polling amongst those leading trio contending spots heading into next month ’s elections taking place on Novem ber.{} !
