This change also positions Canada at 22nd out of 32 NATO member states regarding contributions to UN peacekeeping-a decline from its previous standing of 12th last April.
A spokesperson for Defence Minister David Mc Guinty (Ottawa South, Ont.) did not respond to ’s inquiries before publication deadlines.
The Department of National Defence’s press release regarding these changes highlighted that the military is “rebalancing its global operational commitments to better align resources with evolving defence priorities within an increasingly complex security environment,” emphasizing defending Canada itself, supporting Euro-Atlantic interests and fostering stability in Indo-Pacific regions.
The announcement also stated that Canada’s commitment to NATO-led operations in Kosovo would end by year’s end and that its presence in non-UN missions on Sinai Peninsula would decrease from around 40 troops down to approximately ten by year-end.
“About 50-60 CAF [Canadian Armed Forces] members currently involved with these missions will gradually be reassigned into higher-priority roles supporting operations both at home and abroad,” according to the release.
Dorn commented that while he believes government officials think military forces are overstretched right now, he disagrees with this perspective.
“We could definitely double or triple our size without affecting any other areas worldwide,” he said.
Dorn pointed out that one location where withdrawal impacts will be significant is DRC due to ongoing conflict lasting over four years.
“There’s a huge need there,” he said.
A Canadian serves as deputy chief of staff within this mission’s leadership role.
“It’s a very influential position which we’ll lose-the impact we have on critical areas experiencing major combat operations will diminish,” he explained. “Once we withdraw from these positions it’ll become more difficult getting back into them due competition for such roles.”
Dorn further noted how losing such missions means diminishing regional expertise along with insight into how United Nations operates overall.
