Ontario’s police watchdog is looking into an incident where a 30-year-old man from London, Ont., got injured during an arrest over the weekend related to an intimate partner violence case, according to London police on Tuesday.

Officers were called to a location on Wonderland Road North around 12:50 a. m. Saturday as they looked into a reported assault that had taken place earlier that evening in downtown involving two victims, police said.

Police claim the suspect resisted arrest at the scene and was taken to the London police headquarters, where he told officers about an injury he had sustained. He was then transported to the hospital for treatment of his unspecified injury.

The two victims did not suffer any physical injuries, police stated.

The suspect’s name isn’t being released to protect the identities of the two victims; he faces one count each of assault, assault with a weapon, resisting arrest, and two counts of theft under $5,000, according to police.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been informed and has activated its mandate regarding this case, police added. They contacted the SIU on Tuesday afternoon but no further details were available at this time.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police that may have led to death, serious injury, sexual assault or gunfire directed at individuals.
