Ranjit Cheema’s lawyer confirms that he has been diagnosed with terminal cancer; Sukhdeep Cheema was found dead in the couple’s home on Nov. 15, 2025.
Ranjit Cheema, a 44-year-old man facing second-degree murder charges in connection with his wife’s death last November, received bail today in a Barrie courtroom.
Cheema’s attorney stated that he has terminal cancer and must always be accompanied by at least one of his sureties. His release comes with strict house arrest conditions, including the requirement to wear an ankle bracelet equipped with GPS tracking.
The four sureties are extended family members who have collectively pledged $370,000.
Cheema will live with them at a residence in Etobicoke, roughly 45 minutes south of their family home where his wife, Sukhdeep, is said to have been murdered in Colgan village, located in Adjala-Tosorontio Township. He is also subject to an extensive no-contact list.
He is expected to be released into the custody of his sureties at Central North Correctional Centre in Penetanguishene once the ankle monitor is properly fitted.
A publication ban applies to the evidence discussed during the bail hearings.
The bail proceedings encountered challenges due to interpreter issues and spanned three days before Superior Court Justice Donna Kellway, starting last month. The parties reconvened on Monday and returned to court today.
Kellway delivered her decision an hour after the usual court closing time on Thursday afternoon.
Sukhdeep Cheema was discovered dead in their Sparrow Way home on Nov. 15, 2025.
Three days later, Ranjit Cheema was charged by Nottawasaga OPP.
No allegations against Cheema have been proven in court yet.
The case is set to return to court on March 19.
